Methodology & Sources
This page explains how we build the cost estimates used throughout our guides and in the trip budget calculator, and what those estimates can and cannot tell you.
What our numbers represent
Every dollar figure on Money Map Makers is a typical-range estimate, not a live quote and not a guarantee. Travel costs vary by season, by exact destination, by how far in advance you book, and by personal choices that no general guide can predict. We present ranges — budget, moderate, and comfortable — specifically because a single average number hides how much real trips vary.
Where our estimates come from
We build our cost ranges from patterns found in public, non-personalized information, including:
- Publicly published airline, rail, and bus fare and fee structures
- National and regional tourism board cost-of-travel guidance
- Official government country-specific travel information
- Public transit and rideshare operator published fare tables
- General cost-of-living and price-level patterns reported for different world regions
- Lodging platform published rate and fee structures
We do not scrape or query live pricing systems, and the calculator does not connect to any booking platform or real-time pricing API. This is a deliberate choice: real-time quotes change by the hour and by the user, while our goal is to give you a stable, repeatable planning baseline you can adjust yourself.
How the trip budget calculator works
The calculator applies a set of baseline per-category rates — for flights or other main transportation, lodging, food, local transportation, activities, insurance, internet access, and incidental daily expenses — adjusted by the travel style you select (economical, moderate, or comfortable), the number of travelers, and the length of your trip. It also applies a contingency percentage on top of the subtotal to account for the unplanned costs that most trips encounter. Every input can be edited, because you know your own trip better than any general model can.
Currency conversion
The calculator reports your estimate in USD. If you want to see the estimate converted into a destination currency, you can manually enter a currency code and an exchange rate; the tool does not look up exchange rates automatically, since rates fluctuate and we do not want to present a stale or inaccurate rate as current.
Limits of this approach
These are general planning estimates, not a substitute for checking actual fares, rates, and fees for your specific dates and destination before you book. Costs in a specific city, during a specific season, or for a specific traveler can fall well outside the ranges we describe. Use our numbers as a starting point for your own research, not as a final answer.

Review cadence
We review the baseline figures behind our guides and calculator periodically and adjust them when broader cost patterns shift meaningfully. Each guide shows the date it was last reviewed.
